Policy on Clones and Forks
|
ShoutWiki's official policy on wiki forks and clones is as followed:
- ShoutWiki does not and will not actively advocate for a wiki forking away from an existing host or community, however, we accept there to be occasions when a community or subsection of such community feel there to be a point where such action must be taken as a last resort.
- Communities are required to observe all legal responsibilities and duties as per the license conditions of the wiki content and the host's terms of service.
- There are a number of ways communities can observe licensing conditions with free/open licensed content, ShoutWiki suggests this is through importing a site with full history included.
- ShoutWiki does not support wiki clones, where the site exists purely to duplicate. The community should continue to build new original content to give a wiki its own flair.
- ShoutWiki reminds wikis that forks and clones have a detrimental effect on SEO, and it is often even harder to create a successful new site.
- It is important to remember that you will often lose people, and there will be friction with your former site and community. You should remember to make use of community building and promotional best practices to grow your site.
