Wikisimpsons[edit source]
Seems like ShoutWiki is gonna lose Wikisimpsons. The vote is 7 to 3 for moving to independence. You screwed up big time. If there was another Wikifarm better than this, I would make a Bee line straight toward it after Autopedia (If ever) recovers. GET ON WITH IT. Your testing my patience!!!! --Silver Knight (talk) 08:51, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- I understand your frustration Silver, but making petty demands like this serves absolutely no use other than to annoy staff, especially when you're demanding instant action from someone who currently provides free hosting. I can assure you that ShoutWiki's support team is working around the clock to restore everything back to normal, and comments such as these only cause unnecessary distractions to the people that have dedicated their free time to this restoration. If you're so intent on requiring faster service, then you would probably be better off elsewhere. But that leads to your duly noted comment, "If there was another Wikifarm better than this...." There isn't. Plain and simple. ShoutWiki not only offers the best wiki-hosting, but the fastest technical support team as well. Beyond that, there's absolutely nothing any of us can do except wait it out. Supergeeky1 (talk) 13:18, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- The only farm better than this is Wikia - The only exception they have is the atrocious Wikia skin. The rest is way better than this. I can't stand it. ShoutWiki sucks. No joke!! IT JUST FRIGGIN SUCKS!!! --Silver Knight (talk) 13:29, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Again, yelling doesn't get you anywhere. If you're seriously of the opinion that Wikia offers better support than ShoutWiki, which I find that rather hard to believe to be completely honest, then you're free to fill out Wikia's Special:Contact form, wait two or more months for a reply and pray to whatever deity you worship that they re-import your content. Obviously both Wikisimpsons and Autopedia would be missed, but it wouldn't be the end of ShoutWiki. That said, it would probably be a good idea to give Jack a break from all of these "SHOUTWIKI SUCKS!!11oneone!" messages and instead drop your feeling of superiority and direct your (preferably constructive) criticism elsewhere instead of clogging things up on Jack's end with unnecessary temper tantrums. Supergeeky1 (talk) 13:58, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- "Pray to whatever deity you worship" "unnecessary temper tantrums" So you want a fight huh? Trying to write me off. --Silver Knight (talk) 14:39, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll cool down. I'll stick with ShoutWiki even if it takes 80 days..... Is that good enough for you? --Silver Knight (talk) 14:52, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- @Madclaw. I'm trying to stay cool and not explode. What do I get? An put down insult from you. --Silver Knight (talk) 15:29, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Looked it up, I know what it means now. --Hockeyben (talk) 16:23, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Let's stay calm, everyone. We're working on restoring Autopedia and Simpsons Fanon, but it's something our technical staff is working on. If I could restore the wikis just by pressing a button, I'd have pressed it a long time ago. But alas, it's nowhere near that simple. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 16:26, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
What I'm really curios to know is why there were issues restoring Autopedia in the first place. I's there an older backup it can be restorerd from? What makes it and simpsons fanon different than the 698 wikis that were restored fine? Hockeyben (talk)<
Yes, it looks like Wikisimpsons is moving away from ShoutWiki. This is unfortunate as I like ShoutWiki a lot. However, I have to think about the wiki and I think moving away might help us. However, I would not appreciate you shouting at staff like this. That is not the reason ShoutWiki is called ShoutWiki. Also, please don't bring Wikisimpsons into your little argument with ShoutWiki staff. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 19:30, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Silver's just incredibly annoyed. My question arises is Is there a February 28th backup that AP can be restored from. --Hockeyben (talk) 19:32, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Okay, so its bad news..... If Autopedia recovers... I am out of here. All the effort we put into has turned to sand. --Silver Knight (talk) 00:25, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Any ideas on how I can create a new wiki at Curse.com? --Silver Knight (talk) 00:33, 10 May 2011 (UTC)\
- First of all why did Autopedia not make it? I need to know what caused it to be down. --Silver Knight (talk) 03:01, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Semantic MediaWiki with Statistics-counted Namespaces[edit source]
Hi Jack,
It seems I have a small issue on both Stargate Wiki (EN and FR) regarding semantic data. I use semantic on the Infobox Episode template. When we are on the mainspace, it works (for an example: "Children of the Gods"). When I use the Episode namespace, no semantic data appears (for an example: "Blockade"). Is it the fact that we need to enable semantic on all statistics-counted namespaces on both wikis? Thanks for your answer. Best Regards. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 16:05, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- I didn't do that on purpose, Jack msg'd me about it on IRC but I have no idea as to what caused it, my appologies and may your firstborn be a masculant one. Madclaw Talk 16:19, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi LIMAFOX76, now that's quite odd. I believe it should work correctly; I've set $smwgShowFactbox = SMW_FACTBOX_NONEMPTY; for both wikis, which should make the factbox visible if the factboxes have some content (according to the Semantic MediaWiki manual).
- Like I've said before, I'm no Semantic MediaWiki guru though, so maybe SMW developers could be of more use in this situation. If I recall correctly, they have a mailing list for SMW users — and the developers are generally very helpful.
- In any case, I've requested our tech team to update the version of SMW that we use in bug #169 (comment #3). --Jack Phoenix (talk) 16:26, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Deletion thread[edit source]
I accidentally deleted the Autopedia and Simpsons Fanon thread, I don't like the feature. --Hockeyben (talk) 00:16, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- We're planning to make the deletion features more intelligent in the future. Right now you can delete a thread, a forum or even an entire category easily by accident, as the software doesn't ask for a confirmation of any sort. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 13:06, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Final goodbye[edit source]
You screwed up and lost data. You spent TOO much time fixing it and equally as worse you neglected to tell us EVERY step to assure us of your progress. You went against your word to delete wikis stating that others MAY one day use them (just like Wikia), certain users refuse to accept your failure (not moving, just accepting that it was partly your fault) and are thus becoming EXACTLY like the users we left Wikia because of, instead of whooping Wikia ass, Shoutwiki is becoming more and more like them.
Shoutwiki is like excessive alcohol, things get better and better as you drink until you go to sleep, then you wake up and everything has gone to shit. Ban me, desysop me, do whatever you like, just know that you failed and it will cost you in the long run. Escyos (talk) 05:27, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'm leaving forever, if Autopedia goes down the drain. THINK about it. 4 years of hard work with 6000 articles. --Silver Knight (talk) 06:30, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Silver Knight: The techs are still doing everything they can to restore Autopedia, and we are as frustrated as you are about this.
Escyos: If you had started a community vote on Stargate and the community wanted to move you would have gotten all the help we could offer, but you didn't. You decided to leave on your own. Someone came by and wanted a Stargate wiki, we could have deleted yours, have him recreate it, have the techs needing to import stuff again and then what would we have accomplished? wasting valuable time while the end result is the same as what we started with, a Stargate wiki. At this point I feel it is safe to say we would rather have our techs working on a solution for, among others, the problem with Autopedia. Escyos, no offense, but you could have handled this better, a lot better. Resorting to verbal abuse and vandalism is never a valid option if you want people to listen to you. --Jedimca0(talk) 10:03, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- I don't like being accused of lying, especially when it's not true. One individual may create a wiki, but they certainly should not be allowed to delete it when there are other people on the wiki.
- Thankfully the success of this service does not depend on your opinions, it depends on the users — what they think about us and so on. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 13:06, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- You better recover Autopedia because now I'm playing the role of the bad guy at Wikisimpsons for no reason.--Silver Knight (talk) 14:11, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
- Like I've said, it's out of my hands. Madclaw has a point, however — threatening rarely, if ever, gets you anywhere (but it just might get you into the court room in real life). I understand your frustration with the situation, but constantly annoying me about it is not going to achieve anything, I'm afraid. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 14:35, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Please don't listen to Silver. He can leave, but Me, Red marquis and Coolow will stay and get wikicars imported. Don't you admire red marquis 4 years of dedication? And he can still have something to show for it if Misza writes the software. So quit threatening there is still hope here. --Hockeyben (talk) 14:38, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

No Silver Knight you should have checked your tone or you should have just ignored the comment, as of right now, my limit is reached... and frustration has nothing to do with it, I clearly remember asking not to do this sort of thing. You will have plenty of time to figure out what you did wrong here. Feel free to contact me via email once you do. --Jedimca0(talk) 14:57, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

- We are doing everything we can for Autopedia, and don't worry, we won't let one user's actions decide what happens to a wiki. We gave Silver more then enough opportunities to calm down, he didn't... there's nothing you or I can change about that. --Jedimca0(talk) 15:26, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Comments[edit source]
Hi jack. Could comments and WikiForum be enabled on s:w:icehockey? Solar dragon said wikiforum is available upon request. Thank you Hockeyben (talk) 03:03, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've enabled Comments extension over there. If you need any help, take a look at the extension's help page. Do note that comment logging is off by default, so if you want it enabled, just let me know!
- I'm reluctant about enabling WikiForum on more wikis currently, because there are a few bugs that I'd like to iron out and pull the latest i18n updates from svn.wikimedia.org before we go about enabling it on more and more wikis. It'd be cool if WikiForum could one day replace the widely-used DPLforum extension as wikis' forum extension of choice, though. :-) --Jack Phoenix (talk) 12:22, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Could you enable comment logging? Also, I would like the prefix Blog: Not to be in the main namespace. As I use it has the blog system with the comments. Thanks And just a heads-up, your staff tag doesn't appear to be working.--Hockeyben (talk) 15:17, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
- Comment logging enabled. Please be aware that it might be a bit buggy; this is a known bug. I've also created a new Blog namespace on the Ice Hockey Wiki (numerical index is 500; +1 for the talkspace).
- As for my staff tag, I haven't set it in my preferences for this wiki. The way how preferences are stored changed in MediaWiki 1.16; before 1.16, they were stored in the user table (which is shared between all wikis), but in 1.16, they are stored in the new user_properties table, which is not — at least yet! — shared between all wikis. People would like to have separate local and global preferences, at least for some things (such as language, signature and skin). I've noted the preferences issue on bug #169, comment 2. Thanks for letting me know in any case — I must say that I didn't notice it! --Jack Phoenix (talk) 16:29, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Is there some CSS that can hide the monobook dark look. One of the users on my wiki dislikes it, but I don't want to remove it entirely. Hockeyben (talk) 01:27, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'd suggest poking Skizzerz to get bug #173 fixed; temporary hacks and other patchy solutions are rarely the best way of fixing a bug and they have a bad habit of becoming permanent "fixes". I don't think that fixing bug #173 is that difficult, especially since I already provided a patch. :) --Jack Phoenix (talk) 15:03, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Spyro Wiki[edit source]
The Spyro Wiki has another language site, which is in Spanish, and is also a part of ShoutWiki. But we've been having difficulty with connecting our pages to their Spanish counterpant (same goes for the Spanish wiki to English). Can you help us, please? I know you don't speak Spanish, but I've only got around 1.3 years worth of wiki skill in me, and I've never done this before. I would, at least, want to know how to connect the two sites. Gracias! UxieLover1994 12:46, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hola UxieLover1994,
- hablo un poco de español, pero prefiero inglés. :-)
- That being said, currently only ShoutWiki staff can link two sites (via Special:Interwiki — that special page is also used to alter interwiki links, in other words, links like this one to other (wiki) sites). I've set up the interlanguage links between s:w:en.spyro and s:w:es.spyro — you should be able to use the syntax [[es:Foo]] on the English wiki to link to the Spanish one and [[en:Foo]] on the Spanish wiki to link to the English one.
Please let me know if you need any further help with this, the concept of interlanguage links tends to be a bit complicated (especially since there are interwiki links, too, and many people confuse those two). --Jack Phoenix (contact) 12:57, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

It was Dokument and Imparatus namespaces - the pages I wrote in this namespaces are lost (see [1], there were pages like Imparatus:Hynek Bruntálský z Vrbna, now its just :Hynek Bruntálský z Vrbna and if you click on them, they dont exist). Whats wrong? --Silesianus (talk) 11:29, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks! Talkspace translations? What? Where? --Silesianus (talk) 13:03, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
- Names of the talk namespaces on Historica Wiki — Dokument's talkspace is currently named Diskuse k dokumentu and Imparatus' talkspace is named Diskuse k imparatus. I based my translations on the most up-to-date Czech translation of the MediaWiki interface but still, I can't say that I really understand Czech language well enough to do things like this, which is why it's best for a native speaker to take a look at my translations. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 14:57, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
- Diskuse k dokumentu is correct, imparatus is latin adjective, so it is Diskuze k imparatu (inflected) or Diskuze k imparatus (not inflected). --Silesianus (talk) 15:10, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

You can ask a member of the Customer Support Team to give administrator rights to other Czech-speaking users who want to help out with the translation process, although I don't think it'll take that many minutes to translate the stuff on the English-language starter wiki. :-)
- If you are interested in translating some of our custom features into Czech, please take a look at the Interface Messages Wiki and drop me a note — I'll be more than happy to give you administrator rights over there! --Jack Phoenix (contact) 17:46, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I'm done. How can I test, that it is working well? --Silesianus (talk) 06:37, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
- Create a test wiki in the Czech language and check the "Import content from starter wiki" checkbox on Special:CreateWiki. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 18:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

- We haven't decided on the pricing yet. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 18:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
wiki picture[edit source]
Hi Jack,
Is there any way to change the picture that appears in the top-left of the wiki, the one that redirects back to the main page, to our club logo?
Cheers, Daniel.
Upload a new version of File:Wiki.png on that wiki. --Hockeyben - Talk 20:16, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Deletion of wiki[edit source]
Can you please delete Wesnoth Wiki? --Silesianus (talk) 11:35, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks and apologies. --Silesianus (talk) 11:39, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Enabling subpages on extra-namespaces[edit source]
Hi Jack,
Is it possible please to enable subpages on all "my" wikis extra-namespaces? Thank you very much.--LIMAFOX76 (talk) 17:43, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
- Done for all the custom namespaces (excluding talkspaces) on s:w:fr.24, s:w:fr.eureka, s:w:eureka, s:w:fr.stargate and s:w:stargate. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 18:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Substituted signatures not working[edit source]
Hi Jack,
I figured it was best to ask you this directly, since the forums and bugzilla don't use signatures in the normal way.
I substitute my signature from a template, located individually on all ShoutWiki wikis at User:Michael von Preußen/sig. There has never been a problem before, but since I began editing semiregularly again since the database restoration, I've noticed that my signature is no longer working properly. Rather, when I save the page, it simply shows the code for the signature, as if it had been surrounded by <nowiki> tags. This necessitates saving the page a second time, in order for the signature to be properly substituted.
You will be able to see, using the history of this page, what I'm talking about (here's the diff and here's the original save). Is there any way this can be fixed?
Thanks, 〆vonPreußen/talk
- Check your preferences — make sure that the "Treat signature as wikitext (without an automatic link)" checkbox is checked. It most probably isn't, as preferences aren't global right now. This is a known bug (bug #169), related to the MediaWiki upgrade to 1.16. Ideally it'd be nice to have some preferences global (like real name, for example), while having some others (such as skin and language) local. We're working on making this possible. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 18:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
WikiSimpsons[edit source]
What are we to do with WikiSimpsons? They left, and editing at the ShoutWiki site has been pernermently disabled. Don't you think leaving a whole wiki with many pages, but uneditable and without any way to fit things is unfair? I'm just saying. UxieLover1994 13:31, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- The Wikisimpsons community has voted to move to independent hosting, and we are honouring that request. If you wish to help develop a Simpsons encyclopedia, then you should visit the new site. — Lynton talk • email 13:38, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- UxieLover, you are free to move to the new wiki too, in fact we would love you to move over. The more editors, the better. The vote to move passed so we moved. The ShoutWiki wiki will eventually close down, this will be soon, and you are free to take the domain and make your own Simpsons Wiki but I would love it if you could come to the new wiki. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:41, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Help page user right[edit source]
Hi Jack,
If you remember me, I asked a few months ago for the help page user right, but due to the server glitch I had to re-register my account and since then have lost the user right.
Could you regrant me access to the help pages if possible. Darkstar (talk) 16:02, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- Done! --Jack Phoenix (contact) 16:09, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Request[edit source]
Hi Jack. While I no longer have a wiki here, I still want to help out with things here at ShoutWiki. :) I am requesting the help page user right, as I would like to help with building them up, and with things on the hub in general.--Hockeyben (talk) 16:44, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Hockeyben, I'm glad to hear that! I've given you the sharedhelp user right — let me know if you have any questions. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 18:30, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
