RE: Sidebar[edit source]

Hello there,
I noticed your question on Jack's talk page and I thought I'd answer it. We have a help page, Help:Sidebar, that should explain how to customize the sidebar of your wiki. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me or Jack. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 17:53, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

  • I think there are help pages concerning skin customization. But, if you can tell me what kind skin (colors, back ground images and such) you had in mind, I can see if I make something nice for you. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 23:26, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much! You're also quick on responding! Great staff support you got here! Choosing a color for my wiki is hard since I don't know which color suites the wiki. I mean I'll have to ask you to create many skins for me before I can find the right one. --Knightrez(Talk) 23:29, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
  • Making several different customizations will take time. I'll see if I can come up with a general look for the wiki during the weekend, then you can see if you like it that way and offer suggestions for changes you'd like to see. That way we'll be able to speed up the process and make a cool skin for your wiki. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 23:49, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Thank you again! tbh, you've got a better staff support then Wikia. Thanks! --Knightrez(Talk) 23:51, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

RE: Templates[edit source]

Hello again,
Most templates can be copied to your ShoutWiki wiki, they should work just fine. If you need any help in customizing the templates, or if they don't work, feel free to contact me. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 15:47, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Re: Help on templates[edit source]

Not sure why, but this fixed it. vonPreußentalk

Thanks man! You are welcome to contribute to my wiki. I'll give you free rollback rights :) --Knightrez(Talk) 12:22, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it for fixes like that, but I'm not sure I'll be much good at contributing content. :P vonPreußentalk

RE: Help again[edit source]

I've checked it, and I'm fairly certain that that's caused by both the image size (which stretches out the template a bit) and the fact that there is less text in the template then there is on other pages, which would fill up the space. That's what's causing the slightly wider black borders. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 12:42, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Please help change the problem. --Knightrez(Talk) 12:44, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Lowering the image size from 300px to 225px, which makes the overall template slightly smaller, seems to fix the issue. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 12:54, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
I can't accept that. Look at the article, It's smaller. It makes it uglier. If you can't fix it I'll have to delete it. :( --Knightrez(Talk) 13:00, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
I've tried several different ways, and I've not been able to find a solution, yet. I am however still looking at it, I'll let you know if I find anything. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 13:12, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Okay. --Knightrez(Talk) 13:13, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

RE: Ice Hockey Wiki templates[edit source]

Hello there Knightrez,
It seems all the template needed was some css code, now that I've added that the template appears to be behaving as it should. If you do not see the changes yet, you might have to clear your browsers cache first (see the top of the css page for the instructions). If you encounter any other problems, don't hesitate to ask. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 10:02, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

re:Wikicars wants to merge with Autopedia[edit source]

First, please don't write the same message to everybody. That looks like spam.

I'm not from staff, but I think I can help you. :) You need to download database from Wikicars (it has own server, so ask a person who founded wiki). Next, sign up on Bugzilla and enter a new bug. In "ShoutWiki" section you can ask for imports. Give link to Autopedia (and pages where you decided about merge) and add your database as an attachment. If everything is ok, somebody will merge wikis. Misiek (talk) 10:34, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Blocked[edit source]

Why were you blocked on wikicars? I thought the company abandoned the site. Hockeyben (talk) 04:02, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

[edit source]

Hi, since you want Autopedia to have a new logo, why don't you place a request on the newly created Logo Creation Wiki. Just follow the instructions on the pages. Thanks, ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 16:36, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi Silver Knight. Please see my reply on Jack's talk page. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 02:23, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Welcoming[edit source]

Hi. When you welcome, you can use {{subst:welcome|Silver Knight|~~~~}} instead of full code. Also, please add {{userpage}} template on new user's userpage. Happy New Year! :) Misiek (talk) 11:32, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Thanks.. --Silver Knight (talk) 11:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
Hi both. There's actually no need to place the userpage template on every new user's userpage. Those templates were originally designed to remove userpages from Special:WantedPages. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 12:23, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, ok. :) Misiek (talk) 12:36, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Vector skin[edit source]

Hello there Silver Knight,
I am not entirely sure when the Vector skin will be released, our goal is to have it as soon as possible, shouldn't be to long now.
It is part of MediaWiki 1.16 and we currently have a few things that the techs need to look into (bugs and other minor changes) before we can update to 1.16. They are working on it, but besides the update, imports and site stability are currently also high priorities so I can not say for sure when we will be updating to 1.16, I will however ask the techs if they can give me a more precise time line. I am looking forward to the Vector skin too, it looks awesome and I can't wait to use it. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 13:25, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

  • Yes, the skin will be fully customizable via css and js pages just like the other skins. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 15:50, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

re:Gadgets[edit source]

Dunno, I've never used it. :P But found a link to extension page on mediawiki.org, maybe it can be helpful. To activate it, you probably should ask a staff member. Misiek (talk) 11:59, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Re:Bot[edit source]

I can't specifically create one. However, i am about to start a guide on how to make one using both the bot software you can get. I could always do specific tasks if needed. Try and follow my guides first but if not, tell me what you want to do and I will do it. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 16:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

See Help:AutoWikiBrowser and Help:Bots. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:08, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
What account name are you trying to log in under? You have to use a ShoutWiki account to do so. Did you follow the instructions properly? If you still can't figure it out, give me what tasks you want done and i will sort them for you. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 16:23, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
I used the Knightrez account, but it doesn't properly work or log-in. --Silver Knight (talk) 00:54, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Is it connected to your wiki on ShoutWiki? See Help:AutoWikiBrowser#Linking to your wiki. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 07:14, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks I'll try it when I have time. Btw, what help can you offer me on BOTs? Creating one by yourself for my wiki is excellent. --Silver Knight (talk) 10:01, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I already have a bot account, SolarBot, that can do tasks on any wiki where it has the bot flag. If you can't work anything out and need a bot's help, just ask. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 18:13, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Tell me what you want to do then and i will tell you how to do it. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 17:26, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Could you make a BOT for Autopedia? --Silver Knight (talk) 12:44, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
You still don't get it! I can't make a bot for Autopedia. I can do bot tasks but I need to know what you want done. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 15:28, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, That may be complicated. I'd like to have all non-categorized images categorized like this [[Category:Example images]]. Check out the images category to see what I'm talking about. --Silver Knight (talk) 15:33, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
That's not complicated at all. So, you want that category then? Please give me (SolarBot) the bot flag then i can get it done. ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 19:21, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

RE: Welcome[edit source]

Hello, and thanks for the welcome earlier today. I passed one on to someone else as well. --Jbolte (talk) 23:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

RE: User_talk:Jedimca0#Infobox[edit source]

One way to do it would be to make the .jpg a background image. You can do this by changing the infobox template to:

...

| colspan=2 style="padding:0; background:black; color:#fff; border-bottom:1px solid #999;" | [[File:Nissan-gt-r 2011.jpg|300px]]
|- class="infobox_title"
! colspan=2 |'''{{PAGENAME}}'''
|-
! colspan=2 style="text-align:center; font-weight:normal; background:#ddb;" | {{{Marque|}}}{{{Car Make name|}}}
|- style="vertical-align:top;"

...

Then add the following to MediaWiki:Common.css

.infobox_title
{
color:#fff;
background:black;
background-image: url('http://www.shoutwiki.com/w/images/auto/8/87/Carbon-Fiber.jpg');
background-repeat: repeat-x;
font-size:larger;
}

That should work - Malice (talk) 00:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I tried it and it doesn't work. --Silver Knight (talk) 03:54, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
I reloaded the page. It works!! --Silver Knight (talk) 03:55, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Warning[edit source]

Hello there Silver,
I keep seeing this argument spread, and I do not like it. The best thing for you to do is to just ignore all of it and get back to editing your wikis. Pretty soon this will get out of hand again and then you might find yourself being blocked again. The whole argument was said to be resolved yesterday, and as far as I am concerned it will stay that way. I had really hoped that there would be some way for you and Madclaw to work this out, but at this point, you have to agree to disagree with him and just leave it be. If I keep seeing this argument resurfacing and spreading I will have no choice but to act, as far as I'm concerned it ends here. --Jedimca0ShoutWiki Staff(talk) 16:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, Jedi0, your the one who understands. I just want to get back to Autopedia and edit in peace, since there was nothing to do, the whole argument escalated, but I will try to ignore Madclaw and Supergeeky. Btw, how's the Autopedia recovery doing? --Silver Knight (talk) 05:34, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Autopedia update[edit source]

Hi Silver Knight,

Firstly, we would like to apologise for the delay in finally getting back to you about Autopedia. Our technical team have been working very hard to investigate and resolve the cause of Autopedia being offline, however, they have had other tasks to complete in the meantime. Autopedia has certainly not been forgotten, but it has taken longer to get back to you than we would have liked, and we apologise for that.

I know you were hoping for good news, but unfortunately we are not going to be able to recover the Autopedia database. The technical team have made numerous attempts to recover it, however, some of the data in the text table (where the wiki's edits are stored) is corrupted, and recovering this completely would take far too long to do, to the point that it is infeasible. The technical team have suggested that you try and locate a mirror of your website, or contact Wikia to get an old wiki dump off them.

Unfortunately I have further bad news. The back-up option that you were relying on, wherein a script would be written by us to automate the Special:Export (Wikicars) / Special:Import (Autopedia) process, has not succeeded. The technical team have made several attempts to run this script, but as you may be aware the MediaWiki version used by Wikicars is seriously outdated, which has resulted in several errors during the export process, errors which have been fixed in subsequent MediaWiki versions. The bottom line is that unless the original Wikicars updates their version of MediaWiki, there is no way to automate the process as originally envisioned.

I understand that you will be frustrated by this news, however I encourage you to remain positive and maintain communication with us. I will be the designated contact for your project going forward, so please address all correspondence to me in the first instance.

Finally, I would like to know what you would like to be done with the auto.shoutwiki domain. We can, if you wish, delete the current tables and re-create a blank wiki for you at that domain. If you are able to source external dumps (from Wikia or elsewhere) we can assist you in importing those. As said above, if Wikicars updates their MediaWiki version we will also be able to assist you in importing their content to ShoutWiki. We will await your response on this matter, and understand that you may have to consult others within your community before coming to a decision.

Regards, — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 06:10, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

I was an admin at Wikicars and the community had asked the owner (Internet Brands) to update the version wiki. Instead they left it to die and blocked us. So there is no way to update the version. --Silver Knight (talk) 06:28, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Since moving to Shoutwiki we had made great strides in expanding Autopedia. I personally moved almost 25,000 images from Wikicars and around three thousand articles before the crash. The Wikia database is seriously outdated and, in the meantime, there have been numerous major developments in the car world that we have already missed to document since the crash. All of which require more time from my part to go through.
Frankly, I don't think I have the time, the will or the patience to repeat the same manual importation process. Unless you guys succeed in fixing the corrupted database or find some way to coerce the outdated Mediawiki software in Wikicars to work with the export script, I am done.
I'm sorry Silver Knight but I just can't do this crap all over again. I am spent. -Red marquis (talk) 09:15, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
You mean your retiring? --Silver Knight (talk) 10:13, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

It felt like a dream when the import was nearly done in march. Now it's awful. I have no suggestions for autopedia, but I'm not doing another manual import. One other option is that we join wikipedias car project. They have a decent number of articles, and at the moment, that's the best option I can think of. Hockeyben - Talk 14:14, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Ps, if either of you want to talk, message me over at ihw. Hockeyben - Talk 14:17, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

If there really is no other way, Silver Knight, then yes I am. I'm starting to think maybe it was a bad idea I left Wikicars. It may have an outdated and vulnerable Mediawiki software but at least it was reliable. I've never had to deal with an outage like this. -Red marquis (talk) 15:51, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
You could not know that there might be a outage like this. I think even Wikia is not fully protected form such trouble. The question is - it may take them faster to recover wikias.
@Lynton: What do you mean "recovering this completely would take far too long to do". I am not questioning your technical skills, but it might be a chance (a very little as I understand). Why do you ehr.. abandoning this possibility?
Teyandee (talk) 16:14, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
The technical team have estimated that recovering/repairing the data would probably take more than a year, if it could be done at all. That is just too long for us to be expending server and staff resources on a singular project. Those considerations aside, and presuming for a minute that the recovery would be successful and take only a year, I doubt that the Autopedia community would be willing to sit around and wait for all that time. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 16:35, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry. I'm gonna create another Autopedia and restart again. After one year goes by I would've already copy/pasted from all of Wikicars. Also, RM has said "there have been numerous major developments in the car world that we have already missed to document since the crash" We can't wait for a year. --Silver Knight (talk) 03:35, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Hockeyben has requested that we import the older Wikia dump to auto.shoutwiki. Are you still interested in doing that? — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 03:37, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Unless there are no more options I can take, then okay. --Silver Knight (talk) 04:06, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Myself and RM both voted to import from wikia, see here. So it's been decided. --Hockeyben - Talk 21:16, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

Can you please confirm that you still want us to import the Wikia wiki. We are not going to expend the staff or server resources to do this if you are no longer interested. — LyntonShoutWiki Staff talkemail 11:48, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
